Gotham Coaching Committee

The Gotham Girls Roller Derby Coaching Committee offers a training method based in experience since 2004. Our coaching staff encompasses diversely experienced athletes, coming from non-roller derby training backgrounds in ice skating, artistic roller skating, soccer, track field, basketball, yoga, and personal training. Because we are a group, we offer availability with few restrictions. We train all skill levels from a nationally ranked travel team to rookie skaters who have never been on skates and fuse them together. Our method is applicable to all skill levels and can be tailored to meet specific requests from basic to the most advanced skills to specific derby positions. We have hosted sold out training camps in NYC as well as traveled as far as Alaska and Arizona to coach.

As a member of the San Diego Derby Dolls training team, I have both learned from and taught lots of great skaters. My primary coaching focus is breaking down both offensive and defensive blocking to it’s simplest parts and building it back up into game play scenarios. I love working with skaters and packs to develop both strategy and the skate skills needed to execute these techniques. Having trained on both banked and flat tracks and worked with brand new rookies and our highest scoring All Stars, I feel confident coaching on any surface to any level of roller derby player.

I can teach basic to advanced skating skills, but I prefer to focus on game strategy with an emphasis on scenario drills to help you both out-skate and out-think your opponents. I have 5 years of reffing experience and 4 years of playing experience, so I can assist your league from both perspectives. If your league is just starting to play and needs help turning desire into effectiveness, or if you’ve been together for awhile and you’re trying to step up your game to challenge the established national teams, holler.

Having skated since 1974, I choose to focus on an intricacy of roller derby that I have great familiarity with. Use of positional pack speed is largely overlooked as a skill and rarely ever included as a part of regular training. I have developed the ‘5 Fast Steps Clinic’ as a way to convey the idea that you should train for and use short bursts of speed in almost every aspect of roller derby.

Helping younger leagues by evaluating their current training situation and help create and organize a more sustainable training regimen. Working with trainers, coaches and captains and helping them set and achieve long term goals. Anything from basics of balance in elementary skating and derby skills to understanding how to see and break down derby from video footage.

Banked and flat track. I prefer to cover a wide inclusive overview of skating. I use sport theory and common sense when training skaters so that they can use basic logic and apply it directly to the game. I like to look at the intricacies of skating skills and polish them so that skaters have better control of their bodies. I prefer to train a league, give them a few weeks to an entire year to develop the skills, and then train them again in order to help progression.

I have 6 years of derby experience, and love teaching beginning/intermediate skills for either banked or flat track. I prefer teaching blocking and packwork, while throwing in some endurance and off-skates exercise for good measure. I’ve been the LA Derby Dolls Co-Head of Training since 2006, and have taught banked and flat track classes at Blood & Thunder camp in San Diego as well as leading classes at Rollercon.

4 years of Derby experience added to 30 years of skating experience on rinks and ice. My seminars focus on building from the ground up on Hitting and Blocking for the individual and working it into pair building all the way up to 4 person teams and above. I have been a coach for PVRD for 3 years now and have taught all over North America. I have recently helped to start a Plyometric training program for all levels to give people the chance to work out those Derby muscles both on skates and off.
